26 My Way Of Battling The Rising Cost of Food

Baking Bread

It’s been a while (approximately 2years) since I’ve bought bread, with the rising prices of food I have opt to return to the things that I know and baking is one of them. Bread prices have changed drastically, the cost went from 89 cents – $1.20 a loaf to between $2.79 - $6.00. It literally became cheaper to buy the flour, butter, baking powder, yeast. This week I baked bread its whole wheat rye with soy and Teff Flour. I also included almonds, raisins and peanuts in one loaf.

Popping Corn From Scratch

popcorn frm scratchI love the traditional way of making popcorn better than the microwaveable stuff. The traditional way allows me to be creative with my flavours of popcorn. There is a banquet of possibilities using a variety of seasonings. Today’s popcorn was garlic paprika, trust me it was magnificent. If I could send you a bowl I would, fear not I ate it all with you in mind….hmmmm

Home Cook Meals & Boycotting The Everyday Eat Out

While I do occasionally go out to a restaurant or two I much prefer to prepare my own meals. The savings are astronomical. Everyday I see people that buy meals, breakfast,$ 6 - $8, plus lunch starting from $8 - $12. If one were to indulge everyday in breakfast and lunch that is a cost of $14 - $26 a day bringing it to a weekly cost to $70.00 - $130.00 per week totalling a monthly expenditure of $280.00 - $520.00. Trust, that is just not something that I can afford to do and frankly I wouldn’t go that route even if I could.

  1. I'd say that you made me want to bake bread...and the smell in my house would be delicious. But nope. First I'd have to dust off the breadmaker.
Your bread does look better than anything store bought though!

  5. I love homemade bread. A loaf of bread lasts me a couple of weeks and then I end up throwing out at least a third of the loaf.

  6. True nothing like home made bread or food cost wise and healthwise. But then there is the indescribable flavour that you get in food bought out.So indulging once a while in restaurant food sounds best.

  9. Rhapsody: Thanks for dropping by my blog and giving advice. I have replied you there, but I decided to come here and ask you the same. I am now following you.

    So here goes my question

Are you Nigerian? Cos My hair is not so long, yet it is not so short too. I am having problems being creative with hairstyles cos the popular Afro now looks so wild on my hair due to the length. The main thing is that I have issues with hair styling and the natural hair blogs are not really helpful cos most of them are Americans and their texture is different. Please, can you help?

    1. i came by and answered you there however i'll answer here as well.
I am not a Nigerian, i am a Trinidadian. There are many versatile styles you can play with from twists, to twists outs, to cornrows, wrap pumps, fat plaits, corkscrews, blow dry straight, pressing comb straight, the list is endless. The key to our hair is moisture, after your first initial shampoo and conditioning, you should moisturize at least 2/3 times per week. Use light moisturizers so you don't have too much of a build up and also you can use leave in condition.

  10. Pass the home baked bread please, cause I would much rather have it then store bought bread. The shelf life is less, but that means less preservatives and chemicals, and your bread will be gone before you know it anyway!! And nothing beats the aroma of it baking in the oven. Same goes for popcorn done by the traditional method. Yum, Yum.
You are a woman after my heart!!

    1. I sent you a loaf, was it good, you never said.
Shelf life is good since i tend to freeze some because i make multiple loafs.
Always love a man who know how to enjoy good cooking/baking.
