24 Role Reversal

Remember when you were growing up and you were peppered with stories from your parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents, that began with “When I was your age” and you would inwardly groan, roll your eyes and say under your breath ‘here we go again?’

daughter-kissing-motherI know you know what I am taking about. Have you noticed when you started using the same phrases, getting the same look from your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, basically the younger generation when you're trying to impart some wisdom and discipline them? Well if you haven’t caught yourself “yet” here are some sure signs that you are there, when you catch yourself saying:

  • You know back in the day
  • Children now have no broughtupsy (no manners)
  • Why when I was their age I couldn’t get away with talking back to my parents
  • We living in a different age
  • Children should be seen and not heard
  • Speak only when you are spoken to and answer when you are called
  • When I was growing up I listened to my elders

If we were told as children that when we became adults we would apply some of the same methods of speaking (sounding like our parents/guardians), to discipline, reprimand and impart wisdom we would have denied it vehemently. Ha ha ha ha, isn’t life funny. “The more things change, the more it stays the same”.

What are some of the things you find yourself repeating?

  7. Me, I have morphed (is that a word?) into my mother. I look like her and think like her. LOL

  8. I do talk with my friends who have children about how different it is today than when we grew up. I find myself saying, "you know back in the day", this and that. Although, when I speak with young people, I try to impart into them those things that I wish my mother and father would have said to me. I try to give them positive affirmations and a positive sense of themselves. I tell them about the good things I see in them and how they can greatly affect others and the world with their talents and good atributes.

  9. Actually I’ve heard myself saying most of these (lol) but I hope I’ve never said "children should be seen and not heard" and "speak only when you are called" because I don’t like them at all. Kids should have manners and be polite but should never ever be muzzeled or suppressed. I also find myself saying "I’m old enough to be your mother"

  10. When I hear parents say, "don’t let me have to tell you …whatever…again", I have flashbacks of Mama with her ‘weapon of choice’. She told us what to do – ONCE. If it didn’t get done right away and correctly, the next action was tree branches meeting the behind of children. She did not repeat directions, she took immediate and swift corrective measures.

  12. My least favorite and one I have not used and pray never do is: Do as I say and not as I do. The one I remember the most is: Talking back to my parents. Don’t be sassy……. I have one of my own that I used a lot when the kids were little and others would call them a name. Besides tyelling them that it wasn’t nice to call them names I always said: " That is not the name gave them at birth and I don’t want you calling them anything else." It had it’s effect on the kids. They had to stop and think about it….. I sit back and watch mu daughter that lives with me to see if she has will morph into a me. i must say that she is raising her boys the way that she was raised and every now and then I catch her saying something to the boys that once was said to her by me….. I went to your website that you left the addy for on my space and could not leave you comment because I am not a member…. I enjoy your poems and your musings. Hope you have a blessed week Love and Hugs~Marilyn~

  13. LOL – I sure do remember those moments! We used to say "oh gosh, sad stories again", then tell them to remember to start with once upon a time! Most times we’d have to end-up running because a hand with a hot slap would have been coming fast and furious from somewhere after we made that remark.Roll reversal is right, give them a few years and they will be saying it too.I have no kids of my owns as yet, but I’ve had the opportunity to do some disciplining of my younger siblings and other peoples kids and have repeated the silly phrase of "when I was your age I couldn’t even dream of doing this or saying that….." Of course they always laugh, like "what era are you from", just like we did at their ages.

  20. Hey, you! Still around – aging as we speak. I have uttered just about every one of those phrases at some part of my adult life. It’s especially easy to do when talking to your offspring. I have become my parents!! Most used: back in the day. Peace.

  21. *´¨)
    ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)
(¸.•´ (¸.•` ¤ Absolutely 100% true. Every one of us has uttered at least once, “I will never say that to MY kids,” and sure enough turned right around and told them to “Eat what I made for you. What do you think this place is, a restaurant?!” Well... I know I have. Plenty of times too!
    What a great entry.
